A global leader in sustainability and social innovation, Bill is Principal of William Shutkin Consulting, focused on strategic planning, interim management and business development for renewable energy, sustainable development and sustainable business enterprises, and a Partner of Urban Sustainability Associates, a national research and consulting firm that develops and spreads scalable innovations for sustainable urban development. He is also a Visiting Scholar at the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder and a Research Affiliate at MIT.

As an Echoing Green Fellow in the early 1990s, Bill co-founded the nation’s premier environmental justice center, Alternatives for Community & Environment, and later founded and/or led three other high-impact institutions, including New Ecology, Inc., the pioneering green development research and consulting organization, and the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, the world’s fastest growing sustainable business network. Bill is the author of the award-winning book, The Land That Could Be: Environmentalism and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century, and A Republic of Trees: Field Notes on People, Place, and the Planet and has been featured in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, U.S. News & World Report and on National Public Radio. David Brower described Bill as “an environmental visionary creating solutions to today's problems with a passion that would make John Muir and Martin Luther King equally proud.”
